Sacsayhuaman: a destiny for discover

Sacsayhuaman is located 3 km north from Cusco. The land is about 3000 hectares, where youwill find an incredible archaeological complex,and rich flora and fauna.


According to history, Sacsayhuaman was a military placeat the beginins, then it turn into a religious center and, finally, in a place of work. For many years,Sacsayhuamanwas considered as a fortress, however, New hypotheses say that it was a very importan ceremonial centrer. Nowadays, Sacsayhuaman is also considered as a temple dedicated to the worship of the sun.

Sacsayhuaman is a quechua word that means satisfied hawk. This concept defines Sacsayhuaman as hawk guarding the capital of the Inca empire: Cusco. It was build by Inca Pachacutec, Tupac Yupanqui and Huayna Capac. Its construction took longer tan seven decades and required the strength of 20,000 men. The walls are formed by giant blocks of earth that reach 9 meters of height, 5 meters of width and 4 meters of thickness. The largest stones can weigh up to 125 litters. Each platform has an average of 360 meters in length and are joined by stairs.
