Santurantikuy: a unique artistic exhibition in the world

This festivity takes place every december 24th. Santurantikuy is a cultural and artistic meeting point where artists and artisans exhibit their christmas Jobs made of different artistic techniques like
Silverware, imagery, painting, etc.

The history of Santurantikuys festivity goes back to times in Cusco where many artisans coming from different locations, bring with them the Nios Manuelito. Many years later, intelectuals and artists of Cusco recover this tradition and implement Santurantikuys Festivity.

This festivity is one of the biggest in Peru in terms of folk art. Nio Manuelito is the main carcter. This esculpture is a representation of children Jesus.

Even when the main thematic is Christmas, Santurantikuys Festival also exhibits works from other sectors from local art.

According to history, Sacsayhuaman was a military placeat the beginins, then it turn into a religious center and, finally, in a place of work. Sacsayhuaman is a quechua word that means satisfied hawk. This concept defines Sacsayhuaman as hawk guarding the capital of the Inca empire: Cusco. It was build by Inca Pachacutec, Tupac Yupanqui and Huayna Capac. Its construction took longer tan seven decades and required the strength of 20,000 men. The walls are formed by giant blocks of earth that reach 9 meters of height, 5 meters of width and 4 meters of thickness. The largest stones can weigh up to 125 litters. Each platform has an average of 360 meters in length and are joined by stairs.

Todos los Santos: a traditional festival of Cusco you can not miss

Every november, Cusco celebrate the festivity of Todos los Santos. In the Peruvian Andes, the concept of “death” is conceived as the continuation of life in “another life”. The story goes that atnoon on the first day of November the dead return from the beyond to visit their earthly relatives and enjoy with them the altar of mealsoffered. The deceased must return to their otherworldly before noonon November 2.

November 1st, people in Peru, especially in Cusco, celebrate the day of living, while november 2nd, they pay homage to their relatives who are dead. This day, people visit cementeries where they lead flowers, food, drinks and music to their deceased.

During this days, people in Cusco eat the traditional Lechon, a dish made of roast piglet baked, and tamales. Also, is very common producing Tanta Wawas, baby breads, irresistible for kids. Cusco’s Main Square, one of the principal spots of history and modernity

Majestic Main Square of Cusco has an important history from pre-hispanic times. During Tahuantinsuyo, it was named as Wakaypata, quechuan word that means instead of the wailing. The other half of the old main square used to be named as Kusipata that means instead of rejoicing, as opposition to the first name.

In andean times, Wakaypata was the place for big religious and social ceremonies, while Kusipata was the site for revelry and party after the ceremonies.

On the other hand, Cuscos Main Square was place for important historical events as the execution of Tupac Amaru I in 1572, Tupac Amaru II and his family in 1781 and patriots Jose, Vicente y Mariano Angulo, who led the rebellion against the Spanish government.

The Colonial Art Museum of Santa Catalina

The Colonial Art Museum of Santa Catalina is one of the places in Cusco that houses beautiful artworks. You can find paintings, canvas and murals made in colonial times and by different artists. The works of art that stand out are those representing to Seor de los Temblores, Santa Rosa de Lima and Santo Domingo de Guzmn.

The paintings in Santa Calatina Museum are from spanish and indigenous artists and they were made in XVI and XVII century. The artists names that stand out are Marcos Ribera, Francisco Padilla, Diego Quispe Tito and Juan Espinoza de los Monteros.

Saint Jeronimo’s Festivity: a traditional celebration in Cusco

Saint Jeronimo is one of the saints of the traditional festivity in Cusco named Corpus Christy. Some of the Corpuss Christy saints celebrate their own festivity in different months of the year and at their own place, usually a neighborhood or a district. Last days of september, the people of this district celebrate Patron Saint Jeronimos Festivity. They decorate the streets, prepare traditional food and practice their typical dances to pay tribute to their favorite saint.

The celebration of this festivity is in charge of the stewards or carguyoc. This tradition is performed with the prosecion of Saint Jeronimo accompanied by typical dances, music and delicious typical food like Chiri Uchu. In the night, you will enjoy beautiful fireworks, a drink made from beans and good music.

Last may, Saint Jeronimos Festivity was declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation because of its symbolic and ritual wealth.
